IV sedation is perfect for those with dental anxiety because of the side effects that accompany this type of sedative. If you choose IV sedation you will be required to have a driver accompany you to your appointment and also be asked to go home and rest for the remainder of the day. This process produces partial or even full memory loss of your surgical appointments. You will remain conscious during IV sedation, but will be able to understand and respond to any requests made by Dr. Echols or Dr. Coppin.
The most common benefits that are associated with IV sedation are that it eliminates memory of the procedure; your gag reflex is diminished. IV sedation is more effective than oral sedation or Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas). It is one of the best options for those with dental anxiety, as well as for patients who are having large or lengthy procedures.
For oral sedation, Dr. Echols or Dr. Coppin will prescribe you medication designed to make you relaxed during your appointment. You will typically take this medication before you come in and we will require that you have a driver for your appointment. During your appointment you will be conscious and be able to respond to Dr. Echols or Dr. Coppin during the procedure. Oral sedation is a great option for those with dental anxiety, patients who suffer from a gag reflex, those who require a large amount of work at one appointment, and patients who have a fear of needles.
